Photography is the act of documenting our observations. It's an art form directly influenced by how we see the world and our emotional responses to what we observe.
It’s not the camera that creates the photographs, it’s you. Change the way you see, and your photos will follow suit.
I put together Photo Zero sharing everything I've learned over the course of my photography journey. Things I learned from shooting commercial and lifestyle campaigns for some of the biggest brands in the world, having my work exhibited in galleries, self-publishing a coffee table book, creating multiple revenue streams, and living as a full-time freelance photographer.
I also have included the things I learned from going to trade school for graphic design. The book has it all.
My argument is that an engaging photo doesn’t depend solely on the camera and its capabilities. It depends, largely, on the person looking through the viewfinder. Specifically; how they see light, what they feel, how they emotionally react to the information they have taken in, and how much imagination they involve in their everyday life.
Photo Zero is a digital photography handbook that prioritizes the eye behind the view-finder - with the belief that the eye plays a bigger role in creating a photograph than the camera itself. It explores photography through the observation of light, the study of design, and the examination of our inner world.
Some of the topics discussed in the PDF (in no order):
Boosting imagination, overcoming creative blocks, conceptualizing, using photography as a form of meditation to overcome anxiety and depression, directing and posing a model, creating revenue streams through photography, shooting portraiture, building a portfolio, contacting brands and modeling agencies, the importance of textures and surfaces, lessons from graphic design that applies to photography, abstract thinking, the etiquette of shooting nudity, dealing with self-doubt and judgment, benefits of shooting on film and a whole bunch of other stuff.

Chapter 0 - Breath
Chapter Zero breaks down the ways in which photography as a craft and practice can be a meditative experience. Photography can be a method of slowing things down and managing anxiety. We also talk about the roles of intuition, patience, and curiosity.
Chapter 1 - Basics
Chapter one is a brief overview; covering the basic mechanics of the camera, various lenses, film types, shooting with natural light, and digital vs. film photography. There are several videos and articles on the internet that teach the basics of using a camera and in this chapter, I provide links to trusted sources that cover the topics.
Chapter 2 - Design
Chapter two helps us view light through new relationships. It demonstrates how to implement design principles into observing and framing subjects. We also explore light through geometry, patterns, detail, and composition.
Chapter 3 - Synergy
Chapter three is about making associations between points of interest in a non-obvious way; seeing beyond the surface. This chapter helps us with out of the box thinking and conceptualization.
Chapter 4 - Texture
In chapter four we further our understanding of light through its relationship with textures. We explore how paintings use light and shadow to create a setting.
Chapter 5 - Portraiture
Chapter five dissects the key elements of creating portraiture, along with how to form a connection with our subject. This chapter also outlines grounding practices to release tension in order to help with forming connections with our subjects.
Chapter 7 - Business
We explore marketing, building a strong portfolio, contacting agencies, working with models, gathering an audience, actualizing our style, and discovering outlets for our work beyond digital platforms.
Assignments & Commissions
Every chapter ends with assignments, commissions, or both. These practices are based on real-world scenarios. They require your participation to solidify the information discussed in the corresponding chapter.
